RopeWalks Review 2011 – Part 2: Amazing stories
At the end of the night of the best day of your life, as you glance across to your friends and lovers in the stupor of it all - head resting, eyes closing, you notice the glitter in your hair.
The year 2011 has given all of us some of the very best memories of our lives, with thanks to all of the people who cared enough to give us them. Here is a selected look back at RopeWalks 2011.
KNOWLEDGE LIVES EVERYWHERE - FACT
Throughout their history, FACT have collaborated with a diverse range of groups from social housing tenants to youth groups and schools to hospital patients engaging them in art and creative technology through pioneering programmes like tenantspin (an award-winning community media project) and Freehand (FACT’s young people’s programme). For the first time, FACT placed this work at the heart of the building, celebrating and showcasing the breadth and scale of the often unseen world. Read the story here.
ATALONIA: A JOURNEY INTO HOLLOW EARTH - KAZIMIER (FOR ABANDON NORMAL DEVICES)
R O P E W A L K S E V E N T O F T H E Y E A R - Well done Kazimier!
Atalonia Tours took a new step in human exploration, deep beyond travelled boundaries through the earth’s crust down into a Hollow Earth.
Through new advancements in mining technology they offered the chance to experience a world within in a world, rich in geological wonderment, exotic life and scientific opportunity.
Due to the fragility of this un-spoilt paradise the tour operated for one week only before the borehole was permanently closed – on the final night Atalonia Tours collaborated with The Kazimier for a unique celebration deep at the heart of Atalonia. The result was spectacular!
ROPEWALKS' EXCLUSIVE - INTERVIEW WITH CENTRAL VILLAGE DEVELOPERS, MEREPARK
Central Village. The name might not mean a lot to you now, but in 2013, we think you might notice it.
It is the leisure-led destination that Merepark have tagged as being a beacon in the already thriving community of RopeWalks. Read our interview here, exploring the future of our amazing area of Liverpool.
ROPEWALKS OXFAM SHOP FIND TURNS OUT TO BE WORTH £6250

EPSTEIN THEATRE TO OPEN AS A MUSIC VENUE - SOUND CITY TAKE THE HELM
After many years of legal wranglings and put-off renovation, the renamed Neptune, now the Epstein, is ready to open as an amazing music venue in May 2012. Read here about how Sound City stepped in to take on this great Edwardian Theatre.
BOLD STREET FESTIVAL 2011 - TAKING SOMETHING GREAT AND MAKING IT GREATER STILL
Pavement painters, street entertainers, in-store promotions, live music and a craft fair awaited those
who visited Bold Street for one very special weekend in September. The annual Bold Street Festival,
organised by traders and City Central BID, was back, bigger and better than ever before with
entertainment for all on one of the UK's greatest shopping streets.
Celebrating its fourth year, the 2011 edition spanned not just one day but two - on September 24 and
25 - to give everyone more time to explore the colours and energy and indulge in foods and crafts that stretched the whole street. Even St. Luke's Church was boasting its own secrets in preparation for this fantastic event!
THE WOMBATS STORM LEAF - ALBUM LAUNCH SEES FEVERISH SCENES
Liverpool band the wombats had been honing their latest Album, titled 'this modern glitch' at Elevator Studios. Having spending most of their time in between recording chilling out in the former Leaf in the Baltic district, it seemed logical to premier the new material at the new Leaf on Bold Street. ROPEWALKS WINS NATIONAL GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE RESTORATION AWARD
Liverpool's work to breathe new life into the historic Ropewalks area of the city has won national praise.
The Creative Ropewalks project, which has helped transform the neglected, 18th century harbour suburb into a fashionable, creative and attractive quarter has received a commendation at the prestigious Georgian Group Architectural Awards. Read the full story here.
ADAM BUXTON HELD AN AWE-INSPIREING SHOW AND TELL OF SOME AMAZING MUSIC VIDEOS
Adam Buxton - comedian, writer, broadcaster, video director, general music video enthusiast and YouTube comment wrangler. People were amazed as he lead the full-capacity audience at FACT around some of the wonders of the music video art form, and took them on a journey into it's evolution.
UTILITY WINS BEST SMALL SHOP IN BRITAIN - MARY PORTAS HANDS OVER AWARD
2011 was the year the Telegraph named Utlility 'Best small shop in Britain', beating off fierce competition.
In a statement on their website, Utility said this:
We're delighted to announce that we've been awarded The Best Small Shops in Britain Award for Interiors by The Daily Telegraph. We couldn't have done it without you, our loyal and dedicated customers who have supported us over the past 12 years - and to everyone who nominated us a huge THANK YOU from us all - you don't know how much it means to us.
We'd also like to say a big thank you to the Utility team who make it a fun and exciting place to work who, without which, we couldn't have built the business into what it is today. We are all passionate about the products we sell and, at a time when money is tight, we truly believe that real value comes from investing in timeless furniture and accessories which will last the pace.

It had been a common worry in recent years: Who do we have that can take the place of the legends we and our parents grew up with? Do we have a new Bowie, Hendrix or Marley to take the baton and bring us into the next decades? We do now!

ILILAD ANNOUNCES NEW £20M BUILDING PROJECT FOR ROPEWALKS
These guys have been in RopeWalks since the start of the upwards surge, and now, with the crest still mounting, they have announced a new £20m project which will see hundreds more people based in the area. Located at the back of it's fantastic 'East Village' apartment village on Duke Street, the area will benefit immensely. More people = more scope for creativity, and more money for the area too. CHANGES TO OUTDOOR LICENSING PAVES WAY FOR CONTINENTAL AL FRESCO DINING IN ROPEWALKS
Liverpool city council changed their licensing rules this year, which will pave the way in warmer weather next year for European-style pavement cafes. Read the story on how this will come about here.

EXHIBITION 'REPUBLIC OF THE MOON' AN AMAZING EXHIBITION AT FACT
Imagine living on our closest celestial neighbour. In this new exhibition, seven international artists declare a ‘Republic of the Moon’ and offer their visions for lunar life.
Curated by FACT and The Arts Catalyst, Republic of the Moon presents major new commissions by Agnes Meyer-Brandis and artist duo WE COLONISED THE MOON, plus works by Leonid Tishkov, Andy Gracie, Liliane Lijn and Sharon Houkema.
Come and explore their ideas: from a remote lunar habitat for mythical “moon geese”, to an immersive encounter with the smell of the moon, DIY astrobiology experiments and the tale of a man who met the moon (and stayed with her for the rest of his life).
This exhibition is accompanied by a series of screenings and related events, and is still ongoing now.

ROPEWALKS SAW THE START OF THE REBIRTH OF IT'S FORMER LEWIS'S DEPARTMENT STORE
Central Village, the scheme which will see 3000 new jobs be brought to RopeWalks, also encompases the former Lewis's department store building. Spread over 9 floors, this building alone is a quarter of the size of Liverpool ONE. Take a look at the start of this spectacular transformation here, and witness Lewis's like you've never seen it before!
CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS - EUROPE'S OLDEST CHINESE COMMUNITY BRINGS MAGIC TO LIVERPOOL

MASSIVE DIGITAL ARTS EVENT 'ABANDON NORMAL DEVICES' (AND) FESTIVAL RETURNED TO ROPEWALKS
“A boldly freewheeling art and film festival - something of a call to arms.” The Guardian
After last year’s smash-hit festival, Abandon Normal Devices (AND) Festival of New Cinema and Digital Culture returned to Liverpool for its third annual edition, from 29 September – 2 October 2011.
This year’s festival worked with local artists, volunteers and businesses to take art onto the streets, into clubs, cafés and hairdressers, and to the visionary edges of arts, film, science and belief.
