RopeWalks has one of the most fascinating and diverse histories of any part of Liverpool City Centre. Its rich past makes it the unique area it is today; a great place to visit and make time for soaking up the authentic atmosphere.

Did you know that RopeWalks was home to the first Beatles gig?

Whether it’s tales of wealthy entrepreneurs, merchants and daring sea-captains who first settled the area from 1715, the evolution of the oldest China Town in Europe, the bombing of St Lukes Church during the May Blitz of 1941, a stroll down what was one of the richest streets in the UK at the turn of the 20th Century (Bold Street), and not to mention the venue of the first Beatles gig, RopeWalks always reveals a charmed life that will continue long into the future.

In more recent times the diverse trend has continued apace, with widespread regeneration of the area and its historic buildings, footpaths and public squares helping to turn around a period of decline in the City as a whole. Many of the once derelict buildings have been converted as part of this renaissance into bars, restaurants, clubs, office space for creative businesses, apartments, hotels and new cultural institutions, such as the excellent FACT Centre (Foundation for Arts and Creative Technologies).

These new additions combined with the traditional small bookshops, alternative retailers and radical art and political organisations, make RopeWalks one of the Country’s most engaging urban experiences, all set against the backdrop of amazing historic buildings. It occupies its rightful place alongside other first rate ‘independent’ or ‘alternative’ quarters such as North Laine in Brighton, Shoreditch in East London or Northern Quarter in Manchester. From a historical perspective it is on a par with iconic urban areas such as Spitalfields in East Central London.

Only known as RopeWalks since its redevelopment the area falls within Liverpool City Centre’s World Heritage Site.
